Explain how you can determine the direction of a magnetic field produced by a wire if you know the diection of the current throuh the wire.

This is confusing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please help I rwill really appreciate it

imagine holding the live wire in your hand (well for comfort, suppose you have insulating gloves on), so, hold it with your fist around it and your thumb goes in the direction of the current in the wire. Now the direction your fist(or 4 fingers) are curled up is the direction of the magnetic field

thank you i understand it better the way you explain me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how can i give you a medal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

glad that helped :), also, you could think of it as hitching a ride from an incoming traffic of electrons (current).. so you tell the electrons that you want to go in the same direction as them, by making the famous hitchhiker's sign .. thumb pointing in the current's direction.. and there you have the fist again curled in the direction of the magnet field
