A store offers a 15% discount on all items in the store during a sale. All store employees get an additional 10% employee discount. In the equation below, C represents the cost of an item for an employee including tax, and x represents the original price of the item. C = 0.765x + 0.06(0.765x) Chris is an employee at the store. He plans to buy a coat during the sale. The price of the coat before the discount is $100. How much will Chris pay for the coat during the sale? Numerical Answers Expected!

already given that C represents the cost of an item for an employee where x is original price, that means price before discount. and also we know that Chris is employee, lucky for him :P now calculate by plugging in the original price in that C.!

Plug x into the equation, so $100 is the original price. You get C = .765(100) +.06(.765*100) = $81.09 ?

Additionally, the problem simplifies it by giving you a formula with .765 included because you only pay 76.5% of the original price as an employee. This can be seen if you subtract 15% from 100%, and you get 85%. Afterwards, you subtract 10% from 85%, so 85% - 8.5% = 76.5% In decimal form 76.5% is .765. Just plugging into the 100 will yield the correct answer
