Do your cells use food to directly power their various functions? Explain. Can someone please help me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, it's a long process: digestion. It begins in your mouth, by the salivary amylase breaking down starch. Then it goes to the oesophagus . From their to the stomach where the digestive enzymes like pepsin and trypsin, lipase break down the complex materials and proteins. Then it goes into the small intestine from where the process of assimilation begins. Assimilation is when the basic parts - glucose, amino acids, etc. are directly absorbed into the cells. These are then engulfed by our cells by the process of endocytosis in form of food vacuoles. The energy so acquired is used to power up the mitochondria to produce ATP, which in turn produces energy for the cell. Sorry, I am not good at explaining.

Ok that makes sense now, thank you so much.
