What is democracy?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got this

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

A simple Google search should render an appropriate answer. :)

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy "Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Democracy allows eligible citizens to participate equally—either directly or through elected representatives—in the proposal, development, and creation of laws. It encompasses social, economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice of political self-determination."

OpenStudy (opcode):

Democracy a failed and outdated system of government.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

In my opinion, the only prob is that when people get stupid, the president who gets elected is stupid ;P But what can we do ? Communism has failed in the past. + I don't really like it's ideas TBH See, we get stuff like this: https://i.chzbgr.com/maxW500/6735016704/hD0AAC936/ :P

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

@opcode what do you recommend ? Thats a pretty broad statement. Explain ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Opcode could you provide us a succinct point of view on why you think that democracy is a) a system of government b) outdated c)failure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b and c can actually be meshed into one, but a distinction can be made

OpenStudy (opcode):

Well I'm not talking about democracy in general. I'm talking about the US government.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The assertion you put forth sounds like a bad response to my inquiry. As a democratic society we can criticize our government, which you are exercising at the moment.

OpenStudy (opcode):

Anyone can criticize their government. The matter is what's the punishment is for doing so.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I doubt you fully know the extent of your statement. There is no democracy in a society when a government impose punishment for those that criticize its function.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

I have to say, in this case, I actually agree with msumner. I like a lot of aspects of democracy. For one thing, Communism sertenly never worked. + Opcode, what, specifically do you find wrong about this for of government that another does better ? "The matter is what's the punishment is for doing so." huh ?

OpenStudy (zale101):

Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is LIBERAL SOCIETY synonymous with democracy?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, it is not synonymous. However, IMNSHO only a liberal society can tolerate a democracy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.” – H.L. Mencken, 1920. . so is the government for ,of and by the people of that country :) I agree with qweqwe123123123123111. . that only a liberal society can tolerate a democracy. . because it is sort of very flexible
