Do I need to buy Prof Strang's book to do the assignments, since the course material simply refers to the Problem Number, instead of listing out the problem?

Are you doing the SC (Scholar) version, or just the regular one? The SC version is supposed to be self contained, and designed for self learners. While the regular one is not.

Unfortunately, that is not the scholar course, so you would need to get the text book to do those problems. Might I recommend considering the scholar version. It is supposed to be self contained. http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/18-06sc-linear-algebra-fall-2011/
