Why is it difficult in our present day to develop new energy source? Other than whats discovered?

lots of human civilization factors - politics, economics etc

technological barriers - we still have a lot of barriers to cross, like full fledged space travel

mass/frantic demand for a new energy source - right now we are doing half hearted research as a whole, because humans as an entity tend to exhaust their current resources to the last drop before really panicking about it

the introduction of a new source of energy poses many problems:
has it better performance  ?
will there be to make it available to all, to change the habits of each ?
Is it really economically valid?
Is it really secure?

I think all these issues are blocking the emergence of a new form of energy that has not yet been discovered
