The introductory paragraph should establish the MT (main thesis, or point of your essay) as well as give background information leading into the topic. For example, I were to write an essay on the roots of the American Revolution, in my introductory paragraph I would discuss briefly american colonialism. In the MT I would have a solid sentence summarising the ideas of the essay. Like, I could say: 'The American Revolution was directly caused by the tyranny Intolerable Acts and fueled by the emerging need for independence from England.
