why was iwo jima an important objective for the united states?

It was a major turning point in the war. It also showed the world what power the United States really had under it's belt. Nuclear weapons. It would from then on change the way people looked at war.

It's true that it was a major battle of the war, but it was important because it put the Japanese home islands within striking distance of US bombers. The suicidal and fanatical zeal that their soldiers displayed in defense of the island, though, did play into the decision to drop the Bomb many months later in August.
