1) 4x-y=9 --> Solve for y to get --> y=4x-9 Plug your new equation for y into -8x+2y=-18 to get -8x+2(4x-9)=-18 --> 0=0 This system has many solutions.

To solve the other one just solve one of the given equations explicitly in terms of x or y (whichever is easier) and substitute into the other equation (make sure to not substitute into the same equation --- rookie mistake). If you get something like 0=0 then infinitely many solutions; if a=b, when a is not the same as b then no solution; if you get something like x=a or y=b then you can substitute either variable into any of the two given equations to get the other one.
