Can someone explain what is a comparator and why u use it?

I know it Can be used for alarm circuits but I don't know what else it can be used for

A comparator is used to compare voltages at its input.........an operational amplifier can be used as a comparator...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Basically a comparator compares two voltages. If the one connected to the + port is higher than the one connected to the - port, the output goes high. Otherwise, it goes low.
