1. What was the impact of the Homestead Act of 1862 on the West? It promoted eastward expansion. It supported legislation that limited the government from taking lands from Indian Tribes. It opened up more lands for Indian tribes. It opened up the West even more for white settlers. 2. After the Civil War, Indians had to agree to a number of changes that included all of the following except abolishing slavery proclaiming a 100-year peace giving freedmen tribal citizenship establishing a unified government 3. What was a disadvantage of the Pacific Railroad Act? Choose all that apply. increased friction with the tribes an increase in the number of slaves entering the territory less land for the tribes an increase in the number of settlers leaving the territory 4. Which of these were required by Reconstruction treaties between the government and the Five Tribes? Choose all that apply. tribal citizenship for freedmen peace between the United States and other tribes ownership of the railroad that passed through Indian Territory a single unified government for Indian Territory 5. Which is an example of how Reconstruction in the South differed from Reconstruction in Indian Territory? Freedmen were granted citizenship, land, and rights in Indian Territory. In the South, many people looked for ways to limit freedom and rights of freedmen. Freedmen were granted land and rights in the South after the war. However, in Indian Territory they remained slaves. People ages 18 and older could own land in the South, as long as they had the money to pay for it. In Indian Territory, people ages 21 and older could obtain land without money. Indian Territory closed lands to all people so the Five Tribes would have enough space to build villages and towns. In the South, lands were opened up to only white and black settlers.

Signed into law in 1862 by Abraham Lincoln after the secession of southern states, this Act turned over vast amounts of the public domain to private citizens. 270 millions acres, or 10% of the area of the United States was claimed and settled under this act.
