If a single-celled organism is found to have a nucleus which contains its DNA and a phospholipid membrane, what else can safely be assumed about it?

The big distinction between bacteria and eukaryotic cells is whether they have a nucleus. So I'd say all you can safely assume about it is that it is a eukaryote, not bacteria.
