Write the standard form of the equations of the parabola with its vertex at the origin and directrix at x=8.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So this parabola opens to the right, do you agree?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how can you tell? @Mertsj

OpenStudy (mertsj):

actually, I was thinking of the focus and not the directrix. Since the directrix is x = 8, it opens to the left

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Do you agree with that?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Because the directrix never intersects the parabola.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay but yes I do agree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mertsj

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So it is of the form y^2=4px where p is the distance from the vertex to the directrix and from the focus to the vertex.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be y^2=-32x @Mertsj

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you! @Mertsj

OpenStudy (mertsj):
