What are the types of molecular motion?
The measure of average molecular motion is temperature. How molecules move in a gas or liquid or through a membrane is dependent on many factors and is central to understanding chemical changes. Chemists believe that all molecules are in motion in a constant and random way. This motion is part of “the way things are.” In addition, in living cells, chemicals move in and out of the cells continuously. This passive (non chemical) method of transporting substances through the cell wall depends on the motion of molecules. This can also determine how much of a substance can be dissolved into another substance, more gas can be dissolved into a liquid with less molecular motion (colder) more solid can be dissolved into a liquid with more molecular motion.
