Can someone help with this word problem? We drove 450 miles at 70 miles an hour and it took us 5 hours to get there, if we drove 750 at the same rate how long would it take for us to get there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that doesn't add up. It would've taken about 6.5 hours to travel 450 at 70 miles an hour

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats the problem that was given? I did not understand it either

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you sure it's not 350 miles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because that would be 5 hours

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Positive. She wrote 450. If it was 350 could you show me the steps?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to solve this problem you divide the miles driven in this case 750 by 70 since you're traveling 70 miles per hour.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but 450/70 does not equal 5. 350/70 does or 450/90 does

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you write it in an equation form please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 750miles }{ 70mph }\approx 10.7 hours\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But notice that \[\frac{ 450miles }{ 70mph }\neq 5hours\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's why I wondered if you wrote it wrong. Or if your teacher wrote it wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well it was an example that a classmates has to give for others to solve. Not sure if she messed up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would take 10.7 hours to get there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes driving 70 miles per hour it would take approximately 10.7 hours to get wherever you were going
