as long as you can write, run and validate the code you can use anything you want

You should be fine. You don't have to follow things ACTUALLY how you see them. It's best to make the course work for you, best way you know how.

IDLE is just a development environment you can use to write code. You don't necessarily need the same development environment, or even need a development environment at all.

The only requirement for an editor is that it produce plain text ( no formatting bytes ). After that there are dozens that are suitable.
