Factor the following..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[2r^2 + 10r - 2475 = 0\] I've been trying to factor this for about 10 minutes and I can't get it. I appreciate any help :)

hartnn (hartnn):

that is because you cannot factor it. its prime.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what am I supposed to do for the story problem it belongs to? Try to re do it or put no solution?

mathslover (mathslover):

I would prefer to use quadratic equation formula to find the roots and then putting them in the eqn : \((x-\alpha)(x-\beta)=0\) You will get a factored eqn

hartnn (hartnn):

as of now there is no solution, but is that equation correct ? post the entire question so that we can verify

hartnn (hartnn):

i am assuming r is an integer....if not, there are irrational factors.

mathslover (mathslover):

It is not mentioned that r must be rational, so it is possible to have 2 solns but they will be irrational.

hartnn (hartnn):

yeah, then follow @mathslover 's method.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well actually I think I just figured out what I did wrong. I forgot to multiply everything by the time it they were apart so now its factoring, thanks for everyone's help though :)

mathslover (mathslover):

@brandi2013 can you please post here what you got, so that we can check it also! If you want.

mathslover (mathslover):

Though, good work.

mathslover (mathslover):

Or check it : approx . answers : -37.76 32.76 ^ These are two solns ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The original question: Trains A and B leave the same city at the same times, headed east and north respectively. Train B travels 5 mi/h faster than train A. After 2 hrs they are 50 miles apart. Find the speed of each train.

mathslover (mathslover):

Ok! so r u sure you attempted it correctly or u need someone to check it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I actually got a hold of my friend in the same class to check it and she got the same answer I think its correct

mathslover (mathslover):

I hope your friend did right. :) Best of Luck @brandi2013 :)
