How do you find the area of a regular polygon without knowing the apothem?

well think aobut how you can split a polygon up into

well I started out trying to find the perimeter of a hexagon with a side length of 12. I got 72. So I put 72 into the area equation of A=1/2pa. Which would be A=36a. i'm not sure what to do next to finish finding the area.

look on wiki , they have a bit of apothem formulas that you can use when only perimeter and sides are known
