In what areas do children and adolescents define their self-esteem? What can a parent do, in the first two years of their child’s life, to help the child develop good self-esteem? What are some things that have a negative effect on a child’s self-esteem? How are children affected by these factors?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

think of how you defined your self-esteem...or how your friends did...think of how what you did made you feel better about yourself or make you stand out.

OpenStudy (bostonblue):

self-esteem does not come from external sources like people telling kids that they're great or that their artwork is great etc. everyone likes a compliment, but self-esteem has been proven to come from within. specifically, being competent at things, being able to do things. some people say that our culture has become too much about 'praising' kids - what do you think? and that we give too many medals and awards and certificates, etc. (external) things. . . so from that, and what @nicole_hope said, see what you can think of.

as for negative effects on self esteem. . . again think about what things you've seen or encountered in your own life. one piece of research that's interesting is that it takes 5 (or more) positive interactions to counteract every negative interaction. so, it's kind of the opposite of the praise situation . . . a lot of praise does not equal self-esteem, but a lot of criticism, etc. can have a big negative impact. i hope that helps you answer your question with some specific examples from your own ideas and what you've seen and experienced.
