why earth is rotating continuously around its own axis. if earths rotation is due to some kinetic energy then why it is not getting slower even by a spec.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Centripetal force ? angular speed ? Inertia? right ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@antoni7 I didn't get you. what actually you said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Suppose you spin an egg super quick ... now put your finger onto the centre of the egg and release your finger... observe what happens. and you might get your answer with respect to the earth.. "maybe"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you put your finger you stop the egg from spinning and when you remove your finger you ll notice that the egg continues to spin..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I got you. if I spin a gyroscope or something like spinning top in space will it continue to rotate for ever.

OpenStudy (shane_b):

The Earth IS slowing down. I believe the rate is about 17 milliseconds per century...but you can look it up.

OpenStudy (shane_b):

You can also look up tidal friction which is related to this topic.

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

its due to balance between centripetal and centrifugal force !!

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

Quote : "its due to balance between centripetal and centrifugal force !!" Comment : Sorry, but this statement is 'nonsense' as long as the system and the reference frame in which its motion is considered are not specified.

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

Earth is rotating continuously first and foremost because of conservation of angular momentum.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

^Vincent has it. Shane_B is also correct about it slowing down. http://burro.astr.cwru.edu/Academics/Astr221/SolarSys/earthmoon.html "ok I got you. if I spin a gyroscope or something like spinning top in space will it continue to rotate for ever." Pretty much. The reason a spinning top on earth slows down is because of friction and air resistance.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why gravitation due to sun on earth is not effecting earths rotation. if I spin a rotating top on earth it gets slower down due to earths gravitation acting upon it. But why there is no such effect on earths spin due to earths gravitation. I clearly understood the reason for the earth tobe in orbit. but im not clear with earths spin. please help me friends.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

@M_Vamshi_Kumar_Reddy i answered that question one line above your post :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cool. that's ok. thanks
