The line is tangent if angle ABO is a right angle
Angle ABO is only a right angle if triangle ABO is a right triangle
To check to see if any triangle is a right triangle, you use the pythgorean theorem, but in reverse
the idea is that if you have 3 sides of a triangle: a, b, c and c is the longest side then this triangle is a right triangle if this equation is true a^2 + b^2 = c^2
i did apply pythagoras theorem
I see that you had that going in your work shown
you just need to keep going
simplify or evaluate both sides as much as you can
i dont get it
you have 8.75^2, but that simplifies
8.75^2 = 8.75*8.75 = 76.5625
So the left side of 8.75^2 turns into 76.5625 you do the same for the terms on the right side, then you add them up
so what do you get when you do this?
76.56 = 76.06
good, it's really 76.5625 = 76.5625, but you got the idea
so this confirms that a^2 + b^2 = c^2 is true so ABO is a right triangle with the right angle at angle ABO
so AB is a tangent
