Main drawbacks : 
- Limited resources / survival rates in the early colonies - many colonists were not accustomed to the setting and there were HUGE amounts of deaths early-on.
- Risk of disease 
- Separation from government - thus, less influence in the way taxes are spent, generally reduction of rights and little voting powers.
