OpenStudy (tanya123):

What was the reason for the Europeans to explore and develop colonies?

OpenStudy (wach):

- to benefit economically - this was particularly true with the sugar plantations in the Indies, which relied on slave labor in the triangular trade (slaves from africa, sugar from Americas, refined goods from Europe..) - competition with other countries - the balance of power was important in Europe, as each country tried to exert dominance over each other - expanding into America was a competition between France, Spain, and England - preach idealism - to some extent, MANY explorers wished to expand Christianity and convert foreigners, who they often viewed as savage and unruly.
