1. - 9i - 17 = - 26 
First you want to get -9i by itself and everything else on the other side
-9i - 17 = - 26 (add 17 to both sides)
-9i - 17 + 17 = - 26 + 17 (combine like terms)
-9i = - 9 (now you have to divide by -9 to get i by itself)
-9i/-9 = -9/-9
i = 1

To get .09m by itself, you have to get rid of the 8.6 on the right side. To do this you have to do the opposite of the + 8.6, which is subtract 8.6 from both sides. This will cause the 8.6 on the right side to cancel each other out. Does that make sense to you ?
