Approximate the x-coordinates of all extrema and sketch the graphs showing global and local behavior of the function. y = x^3 - 13x^2 - 10x + 1

@electrokid can u help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mertsj can u help?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Did you find the first derivative and set it equal to 0 and solve?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so the derivative i got 3x^2 - 26x - 10 and after i set it equal to 0 i got x = -0.36891, x = 9.0356

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So now you can sketch it. It enters in the third and leaves in the first. The y intercept is 1. It has a relative max at -.36 and a relative min at 9

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If you want to know how high and low it goes, you would plug those points in and find the y values. But since it is just a sketch, I wouldn't bother.

okay is this correct? |dw:1365387893937:dw|

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Did you forget that the y intercept is 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok
