Basically, there are two (confirmed) theories about gravitation:

Newtonian model: gravity is originated by mass and follow the classical newtonian equation of inverse squares. That means, that the mass of earth attract objects due to the mass content of the bodies.

Einstein model: gravity comes from the space-time curvature due to the presence of energy-matter. That means, that the energy-matter of earth curves the space so all energy-matter around earth should follow the "geodesic" generated by this curvature.

every thing you see occupies a definite volume in space and by virtue of its mass, it'll try to sink in space and thus it makes up a basket like curvature. when a particle having defn mass comes near such an object, it'll try to sink in this basket and hence will move with greater speed towards the former object.
