sketch the graph of x^2-25

OpenStudy (jack1):

you understand that this equation is actually: y = x^2 - 25 Yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (jack1):

and that x is the horizontal axis on a cartesian plane and y is the vertical axis?

OpenStudy (jack1):

so to sketch, make sure you include the main components: x- axis intercepts (sub in y=0) y-axis intercept (sub in x=0) turning point/s (sub in y' = 0)

OpenStudy (jack1):

and a couple of points either side of these to indicate if the slope is getting steeper or shallower

OpenStudy (jack1):

so when y = 0, x = plus or minus 5, so the points 0,5 and 0,-5 are the first 2 you should draw when x = 0, y =-25, so add -25,0 as another point on the graph

we just learnt today that y=x^2 looks something like this; |dw:1365414554668:dw|
