Which answer best describes how most Southern white men and women responded to the new social order created during the Reconstruction Era? They resisted at first, but they eventually embraced the idea of equal rights for all. Southern women were more accepting of former slaves and offered them contracts for work. They struggled to accept former slaves as political and social equals, and some reacted violently. Southern men accepted the idea of freed slaves but did not want them to be able to vote or run for office.
