There are many different strategies for different kinds of desert wildflowers to survive in the desert. Some flowers are ephemeral, this means that they annual flowers which only germinate when the conditions are just right. They grow very rapidly and in a few weeks they're gone leaving seeds that will germinate the next year. Some flowers will remain in a state of dormancy during extreme dry. When it rains they return back to life. Plants like cactus produces flowers which develop into fruits that contain seeds. Some of the seeds might develop in a new cactus. They can also reproduce when a stem breaks off, falls to the ground and develops in a new cactus. Phreatophytes grow extremely long roots allowing them to aquire moisture at the water table.
