In virtue of a secret treaty (Molotov-Ribentropp), the nazist Germany and the comunist Soviet Union invaded Poland (1939, September) on both sides.
This event pushed the democracies of UK and France to declare war to Germany.
Soviet Union was not involved in this conflict and decided to invade Finland.
Germany (that included Austria and Czech Republic), after five months of stasis, occupied Norway and invaded the neutral Netherlands and Belgium in order to strike on the back french and british armies (1940). This operation achieved its aims and brought about the capitolation of France. Some french soldiers surrended, others escaped in England, others kept on fighting in Tunisia and Algeria.
the 10 june of 1940, the fascist Italy, encouraged by the incredible easy success of Germany, declared war to England and France (joining to Germany) and, from Albania, attacked Greece.
But only the intervention of Germany caused the fall of the Balkans into the hands of Mussolini and Hitler.
In the meanwhile, Japan started its aggressive campaign in the Pacific, conquering Australia and threatening USA. USA, even if neutral, gave supplies and sent food and armies to England.
Spain was neutral. Hungary joined to Germany-Italy-Japan.
In 1940-1941, Germany started to bomb England, but this did not weaken UK and the invasion of the island became not possible. In Africa, Italy was losing Aethiopia and was fighting in Lybia (with a german army) against britain troops protecting Egypt. Also in the mediterranean sea, cruel battles involved italian and british fleets.

In 1941, Germany, having a complete control over the continental Europe, decided to start the operation Barbarossa (the conquest of Russia). The first year, german troops arrived close to Moscow and occupied 2/3 of the european Russia, with the collaboration of many italian, rumenian and hungarian soldiers.
But, unexpectedly, Japan attack Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii, destroying a part of the american fleet and pushing USA to declare war to Germany, Japan and Italy.
In 1942-1943 the situation changed in favour of the Allies.
Italy and Germany were forced to abandon Africa.
German penetration was stopped in Stalingrad and soviet armies began the counterattack.
Japan lost the battle in the Midway islands (1942) and this opened the way to the american success.

In 1943, allies troops reached Sicily, Mussolini was arrested by the italian king and Italy, having broken the alliance with Germany (8th september) was invaded by nazists. Mussolini founded the fascist Republic of Salo' in the North, partisan rebellions arose everywhere in Italy and Jugoslavia, nazist troops took the control of Rome, british-american soldiers occupied the South of Italy.

In 1944, Allies arrived in Normandia and free the whole of France. In the meanwhile, Japan was loosing territories and soviet armies were quickly pushing back germans, arriving in Poland.

In 1945, Italy was totally free, russian troops reached Berlin, Hitler died, americans occupied the western part of Germany. On summer, the launch of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima forced Japan to surrend. End of the WW2. Losses: at least 56 mln of people.
