I want to know how do I place the reference polarities for the ideal components of a circuit. Is that something that the problem will come with or how do i chose when to put positive or negative first when coming out of the node onto the next component?

Yes if you place the same polarity lead to an adjacent component a reverse current will be crated within the component other than the current which exists in the circuit itself. Always positive terminal should be connected to positive terminals and negative to negative, unless in the case of alternating current.
