Submarines had a real impact on the supply lines of enemy armies. Since most airplanes were not capable of transporting 'huge' supplies over long distances ships were used to transport resources from one continent to another. I guess you can imagine the impact on any type of warfare if the supply lines were cut. Submarines are also a weapon of war - but it was much easier to prowl on unsuspecting merchant marines than to attack warships. A destroyer was a formidable adversary for a submarine. Still is.
