Ever since nonnative zebra mussels were introduced into the Great Lakes, they have caused ecological problems. Zebra mussels are very efficient filter feeders. They are better at filtering algae from the water than native species are. Which of the following would not result from zebra mussel introduction?

this appears to be multiple choice. OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. excessive growth of zebra mussel populations B. decline in populations of native mussel species C. water becoming clearer because zebra mussels eat more algae D. excessive growth of algae that kills other organisms

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

Well lets see. The zebra muscels were introduced to the great lakes because of ships filling up with water to balence them. they would fill up in one place of the world and then dump it when they has a full load and didnt need them that is how they got here. Thats just a fun fact... It would contribute to excesive population growth of zebra muscles it would contribute to the decline in other muscle species now what of the last two do you think it is...i know the answer and i will correct you.

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

btw..that is called ballast tanks...they fill up to balence it then they dumb when they have a full load to ship. ships can be so boyant they will pop right out of the water, thats why they need the ballast tankes till they can get enough weight to float without them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would contribute to excessive population growth of zebra muscles, right?

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

well yes but we are looking for what it WOULDNT contribute to

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

which of the following would NOT result from zebra mussle introduction

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

thats where you got messed up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It wouldnt contribute to excessive growth of algae that kills other organisms

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

PERFECT! it wouldnt contribute to that...Do you know why? Hint it is talked about in the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because if they're eating algae constantly, then the algae wouldnt be able to have to time to grow. Thanks!

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

your welcome! Dont forget to hit the best responce button next to my name

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay (:

OpenStudy (snuggielad):

thank you!
