Let me try to take what shawn123 said, and rephrase it.

Our problem is this:

\[\frac{ 3 }{ 8 }\times40\]

This is the SAME as....

\[\frac{ 3 }{ 8 }\times \frac{ 40 }{ 1 }\]

The answer to this problem is going to be a fraction.
Like this:
\[\frac{ ? }{ ? }\]

We have to figure out the TOP number,
and the BOTTOM number.


So, here's what we have to do....

1. Multiply 3 times 40.
And put your answer on TOP of the fraction.

2. Multiply 8 times 1.
And put your answer on the BOTTOM of the fraction.
