It depends on your field. Physics requires a lot of squared functions and such, and are necessary for essentially all fields of engineering. There are other, more practical examples, but I'm going to school for engineering, and it's the first thing I thought of. Exponential functions can be anywhere, and if you're in a position where you have to problem solve, especially with math involved, you'll likely encounter it here and there.
