Well it certainly caused problems for the Native Americans, who were steadily eradicated or sent to reservations as more and more land became U.S. territory. It also caused problems for the nation of Mexico, which lost all the territory that became the American Southwest. After the West had been settled, that idea of Manifest Destiny was transferred to overseas imperialism beginning in the late 19th Century, the repercussions of which are still felt today.
