Study the poster and the passage. Answer the questions below.
Library of Congress, Rare Book and Special Collections Division HUZZA! Supporters of the National Republican Party published a poster about Andrew Jackson during the 1828 electoral campaign. It contained a list of reasons for their beliefs. Three of the reasons appear below. HUZZA! For Gen. Jackson!! Undeniable and conclusive Reasons why General Jackson should be elected President of the United States, founded on the most unquestionable authority, and selected from high-minded, consistent, and republican authors. … 5th REASON--Because he has showed himself, under various circumstances, master of himself, and capable of subduing his passions to wholesome restraint; it being an acceded requisite, that he who is entrusted with the government of others, should have learned how to govern himself. How eminently qualified the General is in this particular, is illustrated by the statement of Col. Benton of Gen. Jackson's attempt to assassinate him at his lodgings in Nashville, with pistols and dirks, "the truth of which," the Col. asserts, "he is ready to establish by judicial proof." "As for the name of courage," continues the Col. in his statement, "God forbid that I should ever attempt to gain it by becoming a BULLY." … 7th REASON--Because he is THE CANDIDATE OF THE SOUTH, and is supported by the enemies of DOMESTIC INDUSTRY, who in their public speeches and addresses declare that all duties laid by Congress for the PROTECTION OF DOMESTIC MANUFACTURES ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL, AND MUST BE REPEALED! … 11th REASON--Because a grave Senator, pending the last Presidential Election, declared "if he (General Jackson) should be elected President, he would surround himself with a pack of political bull dogs, to bay at all who dared to oppose his measures. For myself (listen to the colonel how valiantly he talks)--for myself, as I cannot think of legislating with a brace of pistols in my belt, I shall, in the event of the election of Gen Jackson, resign my seat in the Senate, as every independent man will have to do, or risk his life and honour!!!"” Which best describes the tone of this source? bored mocking patriotic supportive
@bethimar
i know its between C and D..
The best paragraph to look at is the bottom one... "if he (General Jackson) should be elected President, he would surround himself with a pack of political bull dogs, to bay at all who dared to oppose his measures. For myself (listen to the colonel how valiantly he talks)--for myself, as I cannot think of legislating with a brace of pistols in my belt, I shall, in the event of the election of Gen Jackson, resign my seat in the Senate, as every independent man will have to do, or risk his life and honour!!!"”
patriotic means??
If you imagine someone saying that, does it sound like a good thing or a bad thing? Patriotic means you love your country (basically).
it sounds bad ..
I mean, it starts with saying he should be elected and then it ends with saying if he is elected, any independent person, including the author, should just quit. So "mocking" is what I'd go with.
doesnt mocking mean laughable.. or something
It means making fun of someone. Laughable, too, but it's sarcasm and teasing and a cruel way to tell someone off.
ohhhhh....!! i got u :)
Which of the following best describes the purpose of this source? The author wants to reduce support for Jackson’s presidency. The author examines the reasons people support Jackson. The author points out Jackson’s character flaws. The author hopes to gain votes to elect Jackson.
D? since its about why Jackson should be elected? maybe? lol
The author doesn't want Jackson to be elected. He thinks he's a dog of a man who will just bring more dogs in with him, so it wouldn't be gaining votes. it's definitely a negative piece... I think your answers are between A and C...
And even though I think he points out Jackson's character flaws, that's not a purpose. The first one, though, is actually a purpose. So probably A.
