how far has the sprinter run when he reaches his max speed? (problem below)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A typical male sprinter can maintain his maximum acceleration for 1.7 and his maximum speed is 10. After reaching this maximum speed, his acceleration becomes zero and then he runs at constant speed. Assume that his acceleration is constant during the first 1.7 of the race, that he starts from rest, and that he runs in a straight line.

|dw:1365685406495:dw| This problem can be solved very easily by using the velocity time graph . You need to know that total displacement (or distance since the motion is unidirectional) is equal to the area under velocity time graph (you may check that dimensionally too ) You may find the area of the triangle being formed above and get the distance.
