Sinx= 4/10 and secx<0 find exact value of cosx

OpenStudy (chihiroasleaf):

have you learned about quadrant in trigonometry?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A little I know 2 and 3 are negative and 1 and 4 positive

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Very perceptive. Now, in which quadrant does this angle lie?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Quadrant 4?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know I was thinking either 1 or 4 because sin is positive

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

sin is not positive in quadrant 4

OpenStudy (chihiroasleaf):

you're given that sin is positive.., and sec is negative.., remember that sec = 1/cos ..,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be quadrant 2?

OpenStudy (chihiroasleaf):

yes... :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So how would I go about finding cosx?

OpenStudy (chihiroasleaf):

|dw:1365665123001:dw| from the figure above.., can you label the side of right triangle given the value of sine x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Opposite side would be 4 and the hypotenuse would be 10?

OpenStudy (chihiroasleaf):

correct... :) now.., what side you should know to find cosine x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use pytherogeam to get 2 sq root 21 and then put adj over hyp and divide then I ended up with sq root 21/5

OpenStudy (chihiroasleaf):

do you mean |dw:1365665610763:dw|
