Explain how breast-cancer genes are still present in the population, despite cancer-related surgeries and deaths?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

breast cancer genes are passed from parents to children....so if all breast cancer prone people stopped having children it wud decrease.... or if they died early before haVING CHILDREN...but it usually presents above forties...so offsprings carry gene and when conditions are favorable will have breast cancer in future... now surgery only cures the cancer and not the genes....

OpenStudy (gavlois1):

Cancer originates in errors of DNA replication of certain genes. Removing cancerous tumors does not remove the gene that will possibly cause cancer in an individual. Since DNA is passed through the generations and due to the fact that DNA replication errors are always present, there will undoubtedly be cancer causing genes present.
