Mean, which is the sum of the data points, divided by the total number of data points. This is what you called the "average" in grade school before you knew about these other kinds of averages. If you cut a plot of the probability density from a piece of paper and suspend it from the arithmetic mean, it will hang so that the baseline will be horizontal. Median, which is the point at which half of the data population is below and the other half above. If you cut a paper model of the probability density in two at the median and put each of the resulting halves on a beam balance, they will weigh the same. Mode, which is the local point at which the data is most concentrated. This corresponds to the highest point(s) on your paper model of the probability density. Unlike the mean or median, for many distributions the mode does not exist or there may be more than one.
