If it is the addition part, you find a way to make one variable set up to remove itself from the equations when they are added. For example, you have both a 2x and an x. If you multiply the entire second equation by -2, that x part would be a -2x. The other parts would also change, but when you added the two equations together the Xes would cancel and you could solve for y.
