After N chocolate bars are divided equally among 6 children, 3 bars remain. How many would remain if (N + 4) chocolate bars were divided equally among the 6 children? Please elaborate on how to answer the question as I didn't understand the question properly.

Please stop me if I have a I explain this badly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let's pretend that N is 9 right? when we split it between 6 kids there is 3 left over. Now we are saying the the number of chocolate bars is N+4. We have called N = 9 so N+4 = 13. Now if we split this between the 6 kids they will get 2 each and there will be one left over. Does that make sense?

The way to approach this type of question is either subbing in a value of N that makes sense, or approaching it from a modulo approach.

I'm confused about the beginning of your explanation. Since there are N number of chocolate bars and as it is divided among 6 kids isn't the expression supposed to be N/6?

OpenStudy (chihiroasleaf):

"After N chocolate bars are divided equally among 6 children, 3 bars remain." from this sentence, we know that 3 bars of chocolate remain, let say that each child get k bars of chocolate, now, you're asked "How many would remain if (N + 4) chocolate bars were divided equally among the 6 children?" from the previous, we know that each child get k bars and you've 3 bars remain , now, you have 4 bars addition of chocolate, so, how many bars of chocolate that you need to divide among 6 children?

I honestly still don't get it.
