The structure of the Earth's interior has been deduced primarily by earthquake waves, in particular the "body" waves. These are the "P" and "S" waves that are created during an earthquake. They are called body waves because they travel through the body of the Earth, rather than on its surface.

Seismologists study how the body waves bend (refract) and reflect from different layers within the Earth. It is kind of like exploring a human body with ultrasound.
