The median is used a lot when someone wants to talk about the "average" price of a house or the "average" income of a given profession. In the case of house prices or salaries of professors, where there is a wide range of prices or salaries, the median is not affected by the extremely large or small salaries. The median is a better indicator than the mean for this.

The mode represents the most frequent number in a data set. So, if you were managing a snack shop that sold sodas, you could take inventory of the sodas. The mode would be the soda that had the most number of cans or bottles on the shelf and could be viewed as the slow selling soda.

In short, median can be used for average salaries and mode for store inventories.
