why does only one sperm fertilize an egg?

OpenStudy (dean.shyy):

If more than one sperm fertilizes an egg, then the woman's womb would hold quite a number of babies. In such case, the maximum capacity would be reached, and the babies that go beyond the maximum capacity of the womb would be aborted due to internal physics stress. Of course, there are numerous other reasons, but that would be a sensible explanation.
