question?
For the first one: you want to get common denominators for all three fractions.
The common denominator should be 6x, so you will do this: 10 • 2 4 • 2x (7 + x) • 3 -- + -- = ------ 3x • 2 3 • 2x 2x • 3
Then simplify: 20 8x 21 + 3x -- + -- = ------- 6x 6x 6x
This can be simplified even further: 20 + 8x 21 + 3x ------- = ------- 6x 6x
These are the steps...
i am solving on paper first...
Then you forget about the denominator for now and solve for numerators: 20 + 8x = 21 + 3x -20 -20 ---------------- 8x = 1 + 3x -3x -3x --------------- 5x = 1 5x 1 -- = -- 5 5 x = ?
if you look at the last step, the answer is in there.. 5x ÷ 5 = x and you also divide 1 by 5 and that would be your answer...
yes :)
i am trying to solve it..
For #10: cross multiply (x+12 • x+8 & x+4 • x): (x + 12)(x + 8) = x(x + 4)
Next, simplify (x + 12)(x + 8). You would multiply the each term in the first set of parentheses by each term in the second parentheses: x^2 + 8x + 12x + 96 = x^2 + 4x
Do you understand this so far? :)
x^2 + 8x + 12x + 96 = x^2 + 4x x^2 + 20x + 96 = x^2 + 4x x^2 + 20x + 96 = x^2 + 4x -x^2 -x^2 ------------------------ 20x + 96 = 4x 20x + 96 = 4x -20x -20x ----------------- 96 = -16x 96 -16x --- = ---- –16 -16 x = –?
not quite.. you have to divide 96 by -16 to get value for x
correct! :)
