might help to define this in numbers instead of percents; assume a population of 100 people

65 are men, and 35 are women

what is 12% of 65, and what is 7% of 35?  this will define the number of smokers

of course i tried with that way and it is incorrect, i assumed 12% of men are smokers and the complement 88 are non smokers, and the same with women.
