How does the state department protect America?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's the diplomatic arm of the US government. They act as the face of the United States -- going out, schmoozing with ambassadors, and helping the US get a better picture of the world around it so that the leadership can make educated decisions on what to do next. US embassies and consulates fall under the State Department and are often the first responders to any diplomatic situation by being right where they need to be, much like how other countries have their own embassies in place as a point of direct contact and to look after their own interests in whatever country they are friendly in. For example, the Secretary of State, John Kerry, traveled out to China to solicit their help in getting North Korea back to the bargaining table to try and defuse the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
