add -2 to both sides

5x + 2 -2 = x -6 -2
simplify. on the left side 2-2 is 0 and 5x+0 is 5x
5x = x -6 -2

you get 5x = x -8

now add -x to both sides
5x -x = x -x -8 (the order does not matter)

5x's take away 1 x is 4x
and x-x is 0. you get
4x = -8

now divide both sides by 4
